I'm happy to be here! I was stunned by the sudden move to start a new forum, but I think it's likely a good one! There are people who enjoy Sinfest these days, even some of us who have been reading for many years.

I admit to feeling uncertain about posting much of anything in the other forum, because it seemed like a lot of what I was reading were people asking the artist to change his viewpoint, and/or complaining about the comic.

I used to really like Sinfest. The last few years, I've really started to love it.

and ugh, yes! like, if you don't like the comic anymore it's not your place to force the artist to change his mind??? go read another comic! plus, yeah, they complain about anything that's not lib, it's so annoying. I'm glad we have a new forum!

*waves silently from the back*

Been reading the comic forever it feels like and while I miss some of the older characters and plots, I find the "new" direction to be really hard hitting at times and it makes me think. I'm not much of a talker but figured if I was going to go to the trouble of registering to a forum to read, I could at least say hi :P

hiyas back!

specifically, i suppose i mean the comics dealing with porn, pornography and the casual victimisation of those involved in the industry. i grew up without thinking really much about it at all - i mean, my dad had a stash of Penthouse magazines downstairs that I was allowed to read when i was a child and its not like i grew up thinking anything other than that the pretty ladies were pretty and i thought a lot of the comics in the back were really funny. and yes, i read the articles. i read everything i could get my hands on back in the day.

fast forward to now and the last couple of years of Sinfest have brought that subject up over and over again, showing slices in comic form of the underlying assumptions about porn consumption and I just... never thought about it. i suppose i should have but i didn't but now that i've "seen it", i can't unsee it.

i'm all for sex positivity and owning your own body and your right to do with it as you will, but the reality is... really that its never about the woman in the picture and what she wants, it's always been about what's being pandered to the viewer - in a lot of cases, telling us what we're supposed to want out of sex and sexuality and what its supposed to look and feel like.

i don't know, i'm not super articulate but i really appreciate the direction of the comic over the years, even if it's not as "funny" as it used to be. its stopped focusing as much on story telling and started to comment more heavily on social and political issues, and in this day and age with the rise of fascists and white supremacy, i appreciate the daily reminder of things i should be thinking more about and kicking back against.

y'know what, chiclet? I liked the way you see things. I mean, I kind of kept on reading the comic while looking other POV from blogs and feminist books... I sort of became a radfem around the same time but not because of it? But yeah. I like the way Sinfest is so on point in telling some truths about pornography and prostitution that people - especially nowadays - really DON'T wanna see... or believe it exists, as the default reality at least.

I've been reading Sinfest for years and years. I love the direction it's been going in - it has definitely matured and found a focus. Not everything needs a punchline, and there is still funny stuff to be found - it's just drier.

I was never a part of the old forums - but when I saw the new announcement I figured I'd sign up. Radfems are needed right now, more than ever. It's nice of Tat to expressly point it out, too. Vive la Resistance, let's see more of it in the real world, too!

I've been here for ages too - since the second year of the comic, I think. And I've always seen writing of any sort as a self-portrait, not as This Is What The Author Thinks but as what matters enough to the author to notice and address. So I've seen the progress of the comic as the process of maturity in all its subjects - treating not only sexual politics with more care, but the rest of the political elements: international, racial and religious.

I cheered when Tatsuya didn't back down from 'Nique's new look, and sent off a thank you email, and I swear... Up until then the comic was more a guilty pleasure than something I took seriously. But in the years since, it's been wonderful to watch him buckle down to the task of doing it right. Very literally refusing to sell out, considering his former base. It makes me more sure than ever of the value of art in developing the human spirit.
